India’s Supreme Court is set to welcome new leadership soon. After the retirement of the current Chief Justice, Justice Sanjeev Khanna, on May 13, 2025, Justice Bhushan Ramkrishna Gavai will take the oath as the 52nd Chief Justice of India on May 14, 2025. His name has been officially recommended by Chief Justice Khanna and forwarded to the Union Ministry of Law for approval.
This appointment is not just an administrative change, but also a significant moment for social inclusion and judicial equity. Justice Gavai will be the second Dalit Chief Justice of India, following in the footsteps of Justice K.G. Balakrishnan, who held the position in 2007.
